Sound:
Aim: In this section I will be assessing sound.
Define: Sound is everything you hear.
Explain: Sound can be split into two sections, diegetic and non - diegetic sound.
Diegetic sound: Diegetic sound is sound which is present throughout the film and can be heard by the characters as well as the audience. For example, people talking.
Non - Diegetic sound: Sound used to create a dramatic effect, for example narration.
MUSIC VIDEO 1 - STRESS BY JUSTICE
How is sound used throughout the music video Stress?
Both non - diegetic and diegetic sound are used throughout the music video. Non - diegetic sound can be identified through the song as it would have been edited in post production. Diegetic sound can be heard when the youngsters are speaking to the camera or to each other, as well as the reality of the scene which is not conventional for a music video, but very conventional for observational documentaries. Diegetic sound also adds to the realism of the scene as the audience are able to hear conversations between the youngsters and the Parisians. An example of this is at 1.05 of the music video allowing the audience to experience the violence with the real sounds of the scene taking place, as well as the music itself assaulting the senses of the listener . Although the young male gang are trying to make a point of not being heard by the government, the audience are immediately prone to disliking the gang as they are going about their ways to hurt innocent people.

MUSIC VIDEO 2 - A TEAM BY ED SHEERAN
I chose to analyse this music video because I felt it followed a similar storyline to my music video, of girl who appears to be vulnerably housed.
Non Diegetic sound has been used as this resembles the song which is being played throughout. The genre of this song ‘A team’ can be catogorised into acoustic. The sound of the public and other outside noises have been muted out in order to keep the focus on the young girl and her journey from beginning to end.

MUSIC VIDEO 3 - FEATHERSTONE BY THE PAPER KITES
There is only non - diegetic sound used within this music video, which is the song itself 'Featherstone'. Without the use of diegetic sound, it makes the audience aware that the video has been staged. As there is no real life sound, the documentary style is not properly conveyed. 'Featherstone' is by The Paper Kites and falls under the genre of indie/folk, this sets the pace of the calm and light-hearted music video.

Sound within my music video:
My music video 'Not At Home' includes only Non - Diegetic sound. In regard to the three music videos I have analysed, I wanted the audience to be followers to the action happening on the screen. For instance, I wanted the audience to act as a 'fly on the wall' and observe the activity and attitudes of the characters from a distance. Both music videos 'Featherstone' and the 'The A Team' used non - diegetic sound which I found effective and therefore influenced me to do the same for mine, as I felt it made the viewer more intrigued to see what the characters did next. However, 'Stress' by Justice used non - diegetic and diegetic sound which I personally did not want to include in my music video. Although it worked in 'Stress' to use both sounds, as director Romain Gavras wanted to get his point across quite fiercely. It allowed me to learn that non - diegetic sound would be purposeful in my music video because it keeps the audience engaged and intrigued to want to see more.
In order to make our piece a social realist music video, we decided to block out the diegetic sound from each scene and instead have the track of 'Not At Home' by Peter Broderick playing throughout the duration of the video, and reflecting on reality. As a group we supposedly juxtaposed between the loving and sweet relationship of the single mum and her daughter, to the melancholic and despondent sound of the song. The audience are hit with emotion towards the ending of the video as the building in which the girls visit has no sense of safety, cleanliness and room for smiles. The theme of the music makes the viewer feel uneasy of what the outcome of these girls may be, as the tune and the lyrics stay the same the whole way through.
